One of the first things my boyfriend and I do when visiting his family in Hawaii is stop at Foodland and buy pounds of poke — we love all varieties but Foodland’s spicy poke is definitely our favorite. We’d pretty much eat it everyday knowing that there’s nothing quite like it on the mainland.
When we’re craving it at home and have access to freshly caught, sushi grade Ahi we make this Foodland inspired spicy poke recipe (recipe from two red bowls). It’s actually super easy and quick to make!
Fresh caught ahi really makes a difference, we are lucky enough to be able to buy fresh caught fish directly from local fishermen.
Ingredients for 1lb of Spicy Ahi Poke:
- 1 lb ahi tuna steak, sushi or sashimi grade (fresh or flash frozen)
- about 1 tbsp soy sauce
- about 1/2 tbsp sesame oil
- 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
- 2 scallions, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise or Japanese mayonnaise like Kewpie Mayo
- 1–2 tbsp Sriracha sauce (adjust the amount based on how spicy you want it
- Foodland adds masago into their spicy mayo sauce, I didn’t add it to ours, I think it’s just as good without it
Directions:
- Slice tuna into small cubes about 1 inch in size. We like smaller cubes for more spicy mayo flavor.
- Combine tuna in a bowl with 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 tbsp sesame oil, 1 chopped scallion, and chopped red onions. Chill in fridge for 30 minutes or so.
- To make the spicy mayo —whisk together mayo, sriracha, and remaining chopped scallions until blended.
- When tuna is chilled, fold in the spicy mayo mix and gently fold until tuna is well coated.
- Serve with rice or enjoy it on it’s own!
